tank and frame question

does the plastic frame on a tank have structural purpose?

i'm asking as i was told about a tank, i'm told it is 150G but i think it may be a 125 or 135G (is a 6' tank but am unsure of front to back and height measurements...i think it is 18" front to back)...anyway, the plastic frame on both the top and bottom are cracked all the way through. the plastic support between front and back still is solid but with the top and bottom frames cracked through i'm not sure that it would serve much purpose....other than to support the hood/glass top....and with that much water i don't see how the silicone alone would hold. so if anyone knows the answer i'd appreciate hearing about it as it could be
