Clown loach advice

Hi everyone. I'm a a very inexperienced fishkeeper who would appreciate some advice on keeping clown loaches. I've recently started out with a very small (40 litre) tank that I have a few small fish in (neon tetras, harlequins etc) and so far all is going well.

I've seen clown loaches in a pet shops and would definitely like to get some (I believe they need to be in a group of around four or more). I've been told that they can get quite big though (does anyone know how big?) so I think I'll need to invest in a larger tank. Apart from places to hide do they need any specialist care? I have a book on tropical tanks but it only gives the bare minimum (temp etc). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
