sick weather loach

I have two weather loaches which have lived quite happily for years with goldfish, saracen comets and golden orfes. The loaches are incredibly over ten years old and about 7 or eight inches long. One is as healthy as ever, but the other has had problems for some time. It began with black growths and raw pink feelers ,which resisted all fish medicines, although the feelers gradually seemed to improve of their own accord. Then a bulge appeared on one side of the loach, nearer the tail end. Until recently the loach seemed fairly happy and unaffected by these problems, but now its whole body has bloated to three times its size and has gone very pale and is less active. It may be time to end things rather than cause suffering, but if anyone has any other ideas I would be very grateful.
