Snail Eating Loach With A Peacock Eel? *PIC*

Hello All,
My newly setup 55 gallon tank, has become infested with snails after a recent arrival of aquatic plants. (yuck.......)
I would really like to stock with a species of some type of loach to handle this problem more or less naturally, but have some concerns about the current, lone resident of this tank, a Macrognathus siamensis, (Peacock Eel). This peaceful, fairly shy fellow would surely get crushed by some of the more active, robust Loach species known to really hammer those pesky snails..... The tank itself has a sand substrate in the foreground, with a narrow strip of potted gravel in the back to accomodate a row of Valisneria. The Peacock Eel digs quite enthusiastically in the sand, but doesn't seem to like the tiny gravel area. A Loach friendly tank?!!
Any ideas, there 'Loach Guru's' on any snail-eating Loaches that
