Subdued Lighting

Hi everbody.

I want to change the lighting for my tank. I have the standard 55 gallon, and right now I have a Perfecto Showlite with two 55 watt bulbs. I thought I was going to have super plants--yeah, right.

So anyway, I'd love a bulb that will really highlight the natural colors of the fish--the diamond tetras for example are sooo pretty yet I only get a glimpse of their shimmering scales when they're in a certain part of the tank. I'm not keeping live plants anymore so that heavy duty wattage I have is not a necessity. So, my questions are:

What IS subued lighting? Are there low watt bulbs available or do you subdue the light by blocking some of it?

Which bulbs will be the best for highlighting color? I read through the catalogs, but I'm still uncertain. And, I hope to hell any bulb will fit the Perfecto Showlite.

Thanks in advance.

Fran
