wether loaches

I was at the local pet store the other day, and spied a tankfull of wether loaches. I was really surprised at how active they are, and that they are not at all aggresive. However when I introduced them to my tank within an hour they disapeared.
The tank is covered, so I knew they had not escaped. I have one gold gurrami(?) that was acting strangley watching the gravel, as if waiting for somthing, when all of a sudden one of the loaches errupted out of the gravell, and practically batted the gold out of the way. Then dove back under burrowing like a chipmonk. I had never seen anything like it, it's as if they take great pleasure in fooling their neighbours! I thought plucotimous(?) was a character, but they take a back seat to the loaches!
