Odd-looking dojo loach: gender/species difference?

I've read and been told that it's impossible to sex dojo loaches, and I've never read anything about different species/subspecies of dojos (at least not really closely related ones), but I am wondering...

My first 2 dojos are wild brown, big chunky guys, 8" and 6.5". They are kind of square in cross section. Then I got a weird looking steely-gray one that had some blue-ish markings on it. The eyes are bright orangey yellow, not black, and set up higher on the head. The face is longer, the dorsal fin is on differently, the pectorals are MUCH smaller proportionally, and when you look at it from above it is really fat. You can see white sides
