Clay pots

I was wondering if anyone here uses clay pots for loachey hiding spots. I have a couple of spots for my loaches to hide in, but was thinking about adding one more hiding place.
When you use the pots I know they are need to be clean and should not have been used with any kind of fertilizer, but do you need to cut them in half? If so, what is the best way to go about this. Also do you need to let it soak for awhile or can you just put it in the tank without it changing any of the water parameters?
If anyone has a good/better idea for a small loach hiding spot please let me know.
Thanks for the help :)
