jumping loaches

Just curious...how in the hell do y'all clean your tanks, change your water, catch loaches, etc. without having them leap into oblivion every time? I can't help that they hit the floor and get covered in dirt, hair, and whatever, but I do feel terrible. I don't want to be a loach abuser. I've gotten to the point now that I break into a nervous sweat every time I have to disrupt their tank. They always gray out and they've threatened to clear the tank many times. Heartwrenching. Is this just one of the hassles of owning loaches? I want to make this process as smooth as possible.
