Expert horseface loach advice needed

Okay, so I've got a pair of choirorhynchus in a tank that has become too small for them. They make infrequent appearances above ground, but recently I saw them both and they definitely want more gravel to plow through. I'd say they are about four inches long now, and appear to be in excellent health.
I've just spent half an hour tenderly prodding the gravel/sand base with my finger tips, net at the ready. No luck at all. The first thing that happens is that you find one and trigger it to make a lightning-quick motion - and you yank your hands out of the tank in surprise! These guys move astronomically fast!
